Big News for 2026: DVSA Test Booking Rules Are Changing – Here’s What It Means for New Learners!

What Is Changing from Spring/Summer 2026?
From spring or summer 2026 (exact date to be confirmed once the new system is live), two straightforward rules will apply:
- Only the pupil themselves will be allowed to book a practical driving test. That means no more instructors, parents or driving schools booking on your behalf. You will need your own GOV.UK account and you will choose your own date and test centre.
- You will be able to change your booked test date or location just twice. After the second change, the booking is locked. If life gets in the way after that, you would have to cancel completely (and possibly lose the £62 fee) then start the search again.
These rules are designed to stop automated bots and resellers hoarding slots and selling them for hundreds of pounds. The result? Genuine new learners should find tests appear much faster. The DVSA is also recruiting hundreds of extra examiners and has set an ambitious target to bring average waiting times down to around 7 weeks by summer 2026.

Since April 2025 you have needed 10 full working days’ notice to cancel or move a test without losing the £62 fee (previously just 3 days). Good planning has never been more important.
